Nathaniel Hawthorne-The Mind Nathaniel Hawthorne was born July 4, 1804 he was known as an American novelist, who writes dark romantic short stories. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts to his parents to Nathaniel Hathorne and Elizabeth Clarke Manning. Nathaniel Hawthorne was originally named Nathaniel Hathorne but he later added a w to make his name Hawthorne in order to hide the relation to his ancestor John Hathorne, who was the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never felt regret for any of his actions. Hawthorne first published novel was titled Fanshawe it was published in 1828. Hawthorne later tried to suppress his first published novel, feeling it was not equal to the standard of his later work. He was very successful in publishing several short stories. Nathaniel Hawthorne Was a very loving man, he became engaged to a woman named Sophia Peabody. He worked at a custom house and joined brook farm, a transcendentalist community, he was a person who accepts ideas no t as religious beliefs but as a way of understanding life relationships. Before marrying his beautiful wife Sophia Peabody in 1842, the couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts. Later into their successful marriage the decided to move to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord.
